Lew Tabackin, flutist and tenor saxophonist, is an artist of astonishing vision. His electrifying flute playing is at once virtuosic, primordial, cross-cultural, and passionate. His distinctive tenor sax style includes the use of wide intervals, abrupt changes of mood and tempo, and purposeful fervor, all in the service of showing the full range of possibilities of his instrument - melodically, rhythmically, and dynamically. Without copying or emulating jazz greats of the past, Mr. Tabackin has absorbed elements into his style, ultimately creating his own sound and aura.
Lew Tabackin's distinctive tenor sax style includes the use of wide intervals, abrupt changes of mood and tempo, and purposeful fervor — demonstrating the full melodic, rhythmic, and dynamic possibilities of his instrument. He began playing flute and then tenor saxophone during high school in his native Philadelphia, earning a degree in flute from the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music. He went on to play with Don Friedman, Elvin Jones and in the big bands led by Cab Calloway, Duke Pearson, Clark Terry, Maynard Ferguson, Joe Henderson, Thad Jones-Mel Lewis, and others.
He met jazz pianist and composer Toshiko Akiyoshi when they played together in a quartet. After their marriage, they later formed the award-winning Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Jazz Orchestra. Tabackin also began to gain long overdue recognition as a flutist, winning many DownBeat critics' and readers' polls and several Grammy nominations. Currently concentrating on continuing his Trio project, including special flute narrative concepts.
