Nestor Nestor Madalengoitia

"In my paintings, I evoke the significance of the subject through elements used in the composition, and engage the audience in discovering these elements of the subject’s personality. Previously, I drew small images through the surface of the canvas, then I painted the subject of my painting in the negative space of this small images. I want the viewer to see the whole painting, but also to be aware of the words, numbers, icons, patterns or simple drawings of animals or objects that I used to create the piece, which relate to the subject. For me, this juxtaposition makes the painting come alive.
The inspiration for this technique came from observing ancient tapestries from the Pre Columbian Paracas Culture, Peru (my native country), which use intricate patterns to form large pieces. I want viewers to see the whole painting, but also to be very aware of the underlying images used to create the piece."
