Opening Act :: Umbrella

Umbrella's Myspace

In the Spring of 2006 Umbrella started playing and enjoying the simplicity of music. Mike on the conga/bongo hybrid drum set, Mark on cello, Kevin on grand piano, and Steve on acoustic guitar. Our living room band played intimate shows to small groups of people, often serving ice cream during drum solos. From backyards to coffee shops, we were noted as a band that transcends generations. Our EP “Sunglasses Burglars” (self recorded in 2006) was an emblem of our creativity.

Over the years, our approaches to music making changed significantly. We slowly transformed from an acoustic to an electric group. Our interests in making music became rooted in the intent to be agents of creative change. We began to find more purpose in the songs we were creating. Just as a child realizes the importance of the air they breathe, we found we could breathe through our instruments in the same way. This allowed us to recognize the spirit and the life of sound.

We are currently in the process of recording our new album. The eclectic intensity of the music carries a timeless array of haunting vibrations and soothing melodies as we experiment with polyrhythms and an acoustic/electric sound. It has been said, “this album represents personal expression, passion, unselfconsciousness, and tons of drive.” I think as musicians we all have different motives and ideals that fulfill us but one driving force always remains, and that is joy.

Our music is an aspect of a larger expression. We want to take advantage of music’s ability to energize an individual’s intent to wake up in the world. Through sharing our music with different communities, we aim to accomplish this. We are people who are spiritually energized, who want to reveal truth through creativity; to bring eternity into time.
